I'm using the Japanese characters keyboard input on my MacBook Pro M1. When I start typing hiragana I get a line below each character I type and then a pop up menu makes suggestions, in some cases changing what I type to kanji. So far, the only way I can type what I want is to switch back to the US keyboard (which is a pain after typing just one word).

How do I stop the lines from appearing so I can type hiragana without stopping?

Do you just want to type hiragana without conversion to kanji?

Have a look at the various settings options in system preferences > keyboard > input sources >Japanese

Japanese input should work the same in all apps.

Thanks! I didn't find Live Conversion in the places you suggested but I did find it in the drop down menu when I clicked on the hiragana icon. I turned it off and typed a few characters. The underline still appeared, but the conversion stopped and the line disappeared when I pressed Return.

So it worked! Thank you for your help, or should I say ちりがとう!
