gmail setup

I had gmail working on my Mac (11.6.8) but when i changed my gmail password the email client keeps asking me to authenticate via browser. When I open the browser nothing relating to gmail pops up., i.e. no where to go. Gmail still works fine (with new password) on iPhone and when using Chrome browser. It just isn't working with the Mac email client. I even deleted the account, thinking I could just set it up again, but I end up stuck in the same loop. Help, please.
