Safari is "using significant energy" even when closed

A couple of weeks back I had concerns about my MacBook heating up above the Touch Bar and such, and noticing that it happened often when using Safari. Tonight, I had closed the Safari app early when I noticed that under the battery icon in the top bar, it still showed Safari "using significant energy" for a few minutes after it had closed. And tested a few minutes later, using only one window open iwht a site that doesn't play videos, and the message was back there. Is there a problem with Safari that could be doing all this? I have no extensions or plugins added, and have added an EtreCheck report (I haven't had time to back the machine up with Time Machine due to being swamped with work on another laptop). Any help would be appreciated, I'm not sure if this is a bug in Safari and if it is wrecking my MacBook.

Hey there Rocketship01,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities. To get started, we'd recommend booting your MacBook into safe mode to test the issue further from there. Testing the issue in safe mode can help to determine if the issue may be caused by some other software that has loaded when your MacBook starts up.

For help with starting your MacBook in safe mode, check out the steps below:

Apple silicon
1. Shut down your Mac.
2. Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window.
3. Select your startup disk, then press and hold the Shift key while clicking “Continue in Safe Mode.”
4. Log in to your Mac. You might be asked to log in again.

Intel processor
1. Turn on or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key as your Mac starts up.
2. Release the key when you see the login window, then log in to your Mac.
3. You might be asked to log in again. On either the first or second login window, you should see ”Safe Boot” in the upper-right corner of the window.

You can find the steps above, as well as additional steps to take whether the issue does or doesn't occur while in safe mode at this link here: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

Keep us updated with the results.

Take care!

Rocketship0,

Does this only happen with this specific website or any website you visit? Has the history been cleared out since noticing this? You can go to the Safari menu > Clear History. Then you can Quit Safari and relaunch it to see if this continues.

1. In the Safari app  on your Mac, choose History > Clear History, then click the pop-up menu.
2. Choose how far back you want your browsing history cleared.

Hope that helps!
