iMac with Mac mini

I have a 2009 iMac that is running OS X 10.10.5 and I was wondering if I could get a Mac mini and use the iMac as a display

Not unless both the iMac and the Mac mini meet the requirements.

If you are looking at buying a new Mac Mini, then you will need an external display to go with it.
