if you are setting up TM for the first time, please see Back up your Mac with Time Machine - Apple Support

but if you already have TM set up and are having issues backing up, please see Time Machine troubleshooting on Mac Apple Support

and maybe look at If you can't back up or restore your Mac using Time Machine - Apple Support
