Macbook Pro 5,5 2009 ish. Install command to create USB boot disk don't work on OS X version 10.6, 10.7 or 10.8!!! I said earlier this MacBook has 10.6.8 installed. I finally took advice from one other person and just installed El Capitan by unpacking the .dmg file for El Cap, running the .pkg file that installs Install file to the Application folder. Double clicked on that install app and it started to install El Cap on the MacBook Pro. Install went perfectly. Then I created a boot USB for El Cap using the commands listed in one reference above. USB was formatted w/o and errors and now I have a USB recovery disk. The sudo cmd doesn't work for anything less than 10.9. Y'all need to update your reference notes to include this restriction.

Hello

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand you're trying to get macOS Mountain Lion installed and the file showed corrupted. Usually something happened with the download or file when this error occurs. We'd recommend trying to download a fresh file from our direct link:

Mac OS X Mountain Lion Installer

Mac OS X Lion Installer

You might also try a new location to download the files to. If you've downloaded them to an external drive, that could be the underlying cause. You may need to run a first aid check on your disk.

How to repair a Mac disk with Disk Utility

Take care.

Ron,

We appreciate those additional details. To confirm, which model of MacBook Pro are you using? Is it compatible with OS X El Capitan? This lists the compatible models: OS X El Capitan - Technical Specifications

If your Mac is compatible, then we would recommend following the steps here to create a bootable installer to update your Mac to OS X El Capitan: How to create a bootable installer for macOS

If the Mac is not compatible with this version of macOS, then we would still recommend using the Disk Utility to scan and repair your hard drive to see if OS X Mountain Lion can be redownloaded and installed successfully.

Best regards.

Followed instructions of creating bootable USB, but got error when trying to erase usb, failed to start erase of disk error (-9999,0)

I tried two different USB, Memorex 32 gb and 64 GB Sandisk. Initially formatted USB to GUID partition and Mac Journaled extended. Checking on the error in other groups, your command don't work on OS X version 10.6, 10.7 or 10.8!!! I said earlier this MacBook has 10.6
