Resetting an old Home Pod

I bought an early HomePod and it has never connected to my devices properly. I unplugged, tried to reset and now it doesn't recognize my phone or ipad as the 'owner'. This support page says "On Mac, double-click HomePod". Where? I've looked.

References to USB plugs relate to the HomePod mini, not the OG 2018 model. Turn it over, unplug it for 10 seconds, then follow the Press the top of HomePod to reset it method. If it doesn't work state which step didn't do what was expected, and what happened differently. Experiment a little with the timings, e.g. try 8-12 seconds instead of 10. If I recall correctly it might have said six seconds after power up at one point.
