Why does Photos Library.photoslibrary keep showing up in the trash?

This appears in my trash every time I start up the computer. Each time it appears again even after I empty the trash. I'm running a 2021 Mac Mini (M1 chip) with OS 12.5 (Monterey). Each time the "Photos Library.photoslibrary" shows up in the trash there is a corresponding new verion ("Photos Library.new.photoslibrary") in the ~/Pictures directory. I do NOT use iCloud. Does anyone have an idea as to stop this?

First: Let me say that I never had the photos library on an external drive. So that eliminates that possibility.

Second: Matti, I tried what you suggested. It seemed to work. However the very next time I rebooted the mac I found a copy of Photos Library.photoslibrary in the trash with a time stamp close to the boot time, and a fresh new copy of Photos Library.photoslibrary in the folder ~/Pictures with a time stamp 2 minutes after the boot time.

Perhaps I need to discuss with Apple on this one.

When testing and creating and deleting Photos libraries one after another, I have occasionally noticed that a new library was automatically created just after some test library was trashed. I suspect it was created by some background process.

So a quick idea: Option-start Photos.app, create a new dummy library to the Desktop (or where ever you know it is a dummy). Then set it as System library, quit Photos and trash the dummy library. Then reboot and Option-start Photos.app, and select your real library and optionally set it as system library.

Did you have it on an external drive that is no longer plugged in? Plug the external in and empty the trash.
