Monterey says I don't have enough - the updater suggests I have 25GB. Yet the storage thing says I have 37.Gb. Very annoying. I only have. 128 Gb hard drive (bad mistake, but why sell something that will ahve problems in the future) and I have nothing stored on it. i've deleted all office apps, all browsers except safari all photos all music. Where too now?

No idea what that would be - you cannot increase the storage.
But, you could buy a larger external SSD drive and use that as your main drive after transferring the entire contents of your internal. You need to be pro-active with what you fill up your drive with

You have an iMac with only a 128 GB drive? I have no idea what model that would be, so it'd b best to start with a diagnostic tool. Download and run etrecheck and post the entire report here using the additional text icon (third from right in the little tool bar)

It is your machine, so it is your responsibility. Gettng one with a minimally sized storage is not a very good idea. The OS and system will take up about 20 - 30 GB, so there isn't enough left.
2017 Air, the only larger drive wasn'[t much more and was a lot of dosh. NO matter how well one backs up, one's machinge fils with crap because it is in noones interest to prevent this happenign!!
As I said, the only options were quite low memory. Yes lesson learned. Reluctant to download yet another option promising better results.
