upgrade imac el capitan to monterey

Hello everyone. My dad has a 2017 iMac that has never had the OS updated since he purchased it. As such it is running El Capitan.

He is now having problems with the functionality of the computer which I think is down to the old unsupported software.

His computer is shown as being supported for the installation of Monterey.

My question is, can I install Monterey straight away or do I have to install an intermediate OS before progressing to Monterey.

It should work going straight to Monterey. If not install High Sierra.

also note: If upgrading from macOS Sierra or later, your Mac needs 26GB of available storage to upgrade. If upgrading from an earlier release, your Mac needs up to 44GB of available storage.

Thanks for your replies dialabrain. You are correct his iMac is 2014 not 2017 so would have shipped with Yosemite (I think I upgraded is to El Capitan years ago). Looking at the requirements for his computer he can only go up to Catalina. I’ll sort it for him, kind regards Nick
