I have a 160 gb ipod classic. when trying to sync recently i got an error message that the firmware is corrupt. 8 tries to return to factory mode and reload the software has failed? Is this now a small brick or can it be saved. Thanks.

Yes, the hard drive has probably failed. See If you see a red X icon on your iPod classic or iPod nano (5th generation or earlier) - Apple Support. Apple no longer service iPod classic. You might investigate options for an SD conversion kit.

Not something I've done personally, but yes. I've done several batteries and the hold switch headphone jack assemblies. The hardest part is prising the case open without doing too much damage. You can search for parts, tools, and how-to guides, or look for third party repair shops who can do it for you.

When I followed the test process you had outlined for another issue, when I got to Smart Data test, I got and "error" and it went no further. Does this mean the hard drive is dead? Thanks.
