Sony HEIF thumbnail not displaying correctly in Photos app

Image below is what I see, its kind of like a heat map whereas the left is a JPG of the same thing. When I enlarge the image, it renders correctly after about a second.

I've tried taking High Efficiency photos with my iPhone and they show up fine but also noticed they are *.heic files even if I turn off Live Photos. The Sony ones are *.heif.

I'm on a Mac Studio 32GB memory, M1 Max
using the latest macOS Monterey (12.4)

Is there a way to fix this, or is it too early for prime time for HEIF? I'm keen to switch because colours (especially skin tones) look nicer with HEIF 10bit and file sizes are smaller than JPEG.

After I edit a HEIF photo, the thumbnail displays correctly in the Photos app on MacOS. On my iOS devices they display fine straight away. So even if I edit a file to say +0.1 exposure, save it, edit it back to 0 exposure and save, it displays correctly in the Photos app.

Anyone know what happens in this process? Does the edit create an xml file or metadata somewhere that is missing with HEIF, or when saving does it create a jpeg thumbnail to display?

The thumbnails may be using an incompatible color Sync profile. You could also try to rotate the image back and forth to recreate the thumbnail image. Select the images with the broken thumbnails together, then enter the key combination cmd-R, then Shift-cmd-R to rotate them back.

Rotating works, and the thumbnail displays, but when I rotate it back it must know that it's gone back to original and the issue returns. If I revert an image back to original, the issue also returns.

What I've done is select all the images and just do cmd-e for auto enhance

That is pity, that rotating no longer works in your case, as the image remained unchanged. But your work-around with Auto Enhance is fine, as long as the edits are what you would have been applying anyway.
