Multichannel - Not detecting by Mac

I am having macbook air m1. I have connected my mac through hdmi-hdmi audio converter (HDMI input , TOSLINK output) to the Sony HT-S20R sound bar which has 5 speakers and a sub woofer. In Audio MIDI setup, instead of 6 channels, it only shows 2 channels detected. Will this be fixed in OS update or any mistake done in the connection? Please anyone suggest. Thanks.

In Audio MIDI setup, do you see an option for HDMI in the left pane? (I assume you do, but just checking ...) If so, when you select it and then Configure Speakers > Configuration do you see an option for 5.1 or multichannel?

There could be a variety of reasons why you do not see 5.1 channels in Audio MIDI setup. Please start by identifying the exact make/model of your audio converter.

Also, verify that your setup meets the various requirements & settings in this Apple document > Connect to HDMI from your Mac - Apple Support

So you have sound through all 5.1 speakers but it does not "feel" like surround sound. Patience. Try a few different videos, ones where you are familiar with any surround effects (perhaps a late Star Wars or Avengers movie). What I'm getting at here is that if you actually have surround sound through your sound bar, it may not be significant that you cannot see the 5.1 channels in Audio Midi Setup.

Also, curious, what make/model TV do you have, and does it have an HDMI/ARC enabled input?

The converter has the optical output, i have connected through toslink to the sound bar. The sound bar can support dolby signal only if it connects via either optical cable or HDMI arc. And no TV is connected in this setup. The sound seems same if i connect the Mac to the sound bar via bluetooth. In both cases the Audio MIDI setup shows 2 channels. I am keen in this MIDI setup because i am trying to get Dolby digital sound out. If i could see 6channels in it i could play dolby contents and listen them.
