Apps force WiFi disconnect but iPhone shows WiFi connection

I’m having a recurring issue with my iPhone where I get randomly disconnected from my WiFi whenever an app (Spotify, Roku) tried to access the network. When I go to settings to check the WiFi connection, the settings screen shows that I am still connected to the network but my phone shows LTE in the indicator.

If I try the usual fixes of disconnecting/restarting etc. the situation does not improve.

Any effort to use an app to control a device on my network results in my phone essentially deciding on its own it isn’t going to do what I want it to do.

It’s difficult to explain exactly without an example so:

I open Spotify to play some music on my Sonos Bar.

My phone will show that I am connected to my network up until the moment I try to change my “Current Device” from my phone to the Sonos Bar. As soon as I try to view devices on my network my WiFi fin turns into an LTE indicator and no devices are found.

This happens when using the Roku app to connect to a device to use the app as a remote control. Our remote died and we limped along using the app until this issue became to frustratingly common we bought an entirely new Roku and remote to avoid using the app.

This is weird. Send help. 😆

Thanks for those details TheRealRuin,

What we'd recommend then is to Contact Apple Support so that they can do some additional diagnostics with you.

Hello TheRealRuin,

For Wi-Fi connectivity issues, you'll want to follow the steps below:

1. Make sure that your router is on and you're within range
If you're too far from your Wi-Fi router, you can't get a signal, so make sure that you're within range.

2. Make sure that Wi-Fi is on and you can see your network
Go to Settings > Wi-Fi and make sure that Wi-Fi is on. Tap the name of your Wi-Fi network to join. A blue checkmark beside a network name means that you're connected.
If you see Auto Join Disabled under your Wi-Fi network name, tap it turn on Auto-Join.
An iPhone on the Settings > Wi-Fi screen. There's a blue a checkmark next to the Wi-Fi network's name.

3. If asked, enter your Wi-Fi password
If asked, enter the password for your Wi-Fi network. Get help if you don't know your password.
Even if you enter the correct password, you might see an "unable to join the network" message or an "incorrect password" message. Restart all of your devices, then try to enter your password again.

4. Check for issues with your Wi-Fi network
If iOS or iPadOS detects an issue with your Wi-Fi connection, you might see a Wi-Fi recommendation under the name of the Wi-Fi network that you're connected to. For example, you might see the alert "No Internet Connection." To get more information, tap the Wi-Fi network.
An iPhone on the Settings > Wi-Fi screen. Is says "No Internet Connection" under the Wi-Fi network's name.

5. Check your cables and connections
If you still can't connect to your network or get online, make sure that your router is connected to the modem and turned on.

6. Restart
Try restarting your iOS or iPadOS device. Here's how to restart your iPhoneiPad, or iPod touch.
Then restart your router, and cable or DSL modem. To restart your router or modem, unplug it, then plug it back in.
After you restart each device, see if you fixed the issue.

7. Still can't connect?
Reset your Network Settings. If you're using iOS or iPadOS 15 or later, tap Settings > General > Transfer or Reset [Device] > Reset > Reset Network Settings. If you're using iOS or iPadOS 14 or earlier, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This also resets Wi-Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN and APN settings that you've used before.

TheRealRuin,

We'll need to dig a little deeper to determine if the issue could be software or hardware related. To that end, do you experience this behavior

when you're connected to another network?

To make sure that we're covering all of our bases, let's follow these steps to adjust your Wi-Fi router settings. Doing so, will ensure that your device is

securely and reliably connected to your network: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points

We look forward to hearing back from you soon.

Best regards!

Hey there TheRealRuin,

Let's continue making sure our undrestanding of what's happening is correct, along with continuing to rule out some other possible causes:

  1. You mentioned updating both the iOS and apps on your iPhone, and we see you have iOS 15. As the latest is iOS 15.5, is this the version showing within Settings > General > About?
  2. You also mentioned that this occurs when using both Spotify and Roku apps to control your Sonos Bar, but if you use a built-in app(like Apple Music) with your Sonos Bar, does the same issue occur?
  3. What about testing for this same issue while your iPhone is connected with a different speaker other than your Sonos Bar, or even with a pair of Bluetooth headphones?
  4. Have you contacted Sonos about this to see if they can rule out anything on their end, like a possible firmware update as one example?

Cheers!

Hi Bruno,

If you don’t mind, I’ll respond in the same format.

  1. Yes. 15.5. All apps are updated and auto-update as well.
  2. See second comment above. It is now device wide and across all apps trying to use WiFi regardless of intent or function. Chrome browser disconnected the phone from WiFi when I launched it to check this thread. It seems I can only be connected to WiFi on the Home Screen.
  3. Same as #2. Device and app wide.
  4. Again, it’s across the device. Like I said in the second comment. 😉

Could this be a worsening hardware failure?

Sorry Chuck, but that wasn’t helpful at all. I said in my OP I tried the usual stuff. 😉

I can see the network. My iPhone just refuses to stay connected. Even as I type this. From 14’ away from the router… that’s on gigabit fiber optic.

This is not a problem on any other iPhone in the home. Only mine. It is a new issue on a two year old phone.

It has gotten worse since the OP as well. Now it’s intermittent across all apps. WiFi is only connected whenever my phone is struck by a random and unpredictable whim.

Hello Grace,

I am not on other WiFi networks (for several reasons) to test this out.

My phone has worked fine on my network until this problem began several months ago. No network settings were changed at that time.

Other iPhones in the home do not have this issue.

I promise y’all, we’ve done all of the base level troubleshooting we can think of - that’s why I’m here. I’m at wit’s end after having tried all of the usual routes.
