I am having troubles setting up gmail in Mail.

I had gmail in Mail for many years, but now is not working and when trying to reload it (from zero) my Mac gets stock. Basically it happens when I select GOOGLE as the provider.

Verify you have Safari set as your default browser....to get past your issues.

You can change the browser back to your preferred after gmail is set up.

Not me, but I dropped gmail years ago.

My son has it and he stated he had no problems.
