Creative Pebble v3 USB-C audio issues with MacBook Pro

Just wondering whether anybody else has run into this. I've been working for about 2-3 months to diagnose audio issues on my 2019 16-inch MBP. The symptoms, which are intermittent but not infrequent, goes like this:

  1. Audio output stops (audio input is fine)
  2. Sound panel of System Preferences is no longer available
  3. Applications that use audio output (YouTube, Vimeo, Zoom, Discord, Games) no longer start properly
  4. Cannot Force Quit the application whose audio stopped working
  5. Often, cannot shutdown the system other than by a hardware shutdown (pressing the power button for 10 seconds)
  6. If the speakers are connected directly to the laptop instead of via my LandingZone dock...MBP crashes hard
  7. Crash report for system, or debug stack for applications upon reboot after hard shutdown, always include coreaudiod and USB audio driver

This happened with Big Sur, and now it happens with Monterrey as well. Other USB speakers worked fine for 2+ years prior to me getting these Creative Pebble V3s.

I have gone through all the troubleshooting steps with Apple support (reset NVRAM/SMC, safe mode, update OS, reinstall OS, upgrade OS, etc.) to no avail. In isolating hardware components I first ran without my dock, which only changed the "sound stops" to "system crashes."

HOWEVER, disconnecting the Creative Pebble V3 has allowed me to run without problems for over a week now. So, I think i have the culprit. The questions I have are

  • Has anybody tried these speakers with their MBP?
  • Any other troubleshooting ideas? (there are no firmware updates for the speakers for MacOS)

I do have a ticket open with Creative, but figured that trying to attack this from both sides might help.

I did receive a response. I believe they sincerely looked at it, but this was their response. The idea that a Ma use would keep a Bootcamp partition or Windows PC around just to be able to update firmware on speakers is...well...

If you report it to them, maybe it will help. My case ID with Creative is 160651821 but if you mention that, please make sure you point out that you have a completely different year and model. Best of luck.

Please be informed, that so far this issue cannot be replicated on our

end. This seems to be an isolated issue with the particular Mac that you

are using.

Understand that you are using a Mac, however please

check if you have a Windows PC to run the firmware installer or not.

Considering that you are running an Intel based Mac, running Windows via

Bootcamp is possible on your Mac.

Before proceeding any

further, if he have another Mac system to test the Pebble V3 behavior,

you can verify it on another Mac. If not - please try the steps below:

You can try to reset the SMC of the Mac and check if the issue still persists:

How to reset the SMC of your Mac - Apple Support

If resetting SMC does not help, you may have to reset to PRAM as well:

If you require further assistance, please reply to this email and we will get back to you.
