Alphabetical file name order within folder

Folders have always opened with files in alphabetical order. For some reason they have recently started to have an order whereby the last opened file goes to the top of the list. Needless to say, this throws the alphabetical sequence completely out. Does anyone know why this happens and have a permanent solution to getting the folder contents back to alphabetical order ?
