Why do you have 12.4, Monterey on your signature, and are asking about Sierra, which is 10.12 through 10.12.6? Is the problem on a different computer?
Secondly, the only reason why "Sierra" will be asked for in terms of hard disks is if the hard disk was somehow encrypted with Filevault on Sierra or later. High Sierra, if it is asking for that, is because Sierra and older systems can't read Apple's new APFS format.
Go to Apple menu -> About This Mac.
Note the following is true:
10.6 through 10.12.6 HFS Extended GUID format
10.6 Snow Leopard, 10.7 Lion, 10.8 Mountain Lion, 10.9 Mavericks, 10.10 Yosemite, 10.11 El Capitan, 10.12 Sierra.
Sierra 10.12.4- present supports multifactor authentication with cell phones and iPads for secondary verification of AppleIDs.
High Sierra 10.13- present supports APFS and HFS Extended GUID booting, although formatting is APFS only on solid state drives and thumb drives for booting Macs and installing new MacOSes.
10.15 and newer support only 64 bit applications and drivers.
11.0 to 11.6.6 and 12 to 12.4 are newer systems than any 10.13, 10.14, or 10.15 systems.
