Location services

What does it mean when there is a filled purple arrow next to "Find my iPhone" when looking in: Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services - when I have not used find my iPhone recently? Is this the same app used for my friends to see my shared location? Does it just mean one of them looked to see my location recently? Or is the app continuously checking my location when I don’t use it?
