I have lost the tools icon from my home screen . . . I phone 8 plus. It has been gone a couple of days. How do I get it back?

Use App Library to search the app you are looking for, see this Apple article:

Organize the Home Screen and App Library on your iPhone

If you have find the app, tap & hold on the app, then drag to the Home screen & drop it.

“Tools icon” … what might that mean? I think of something with a wrench, or a hammer, but I know of no such icon in iOS.

Do you mean the Settings icon?

If so, try Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Home Screen Layout
