Why do my AirPods say they’re connected but audio plays out of my phone?

Just had this problem right now. My AirPods would say they were connected in Bluetooth settings and would make the connecting sound in the headphones but whatever I tried listening to would play out of my phone speakers. I tried turning Bluetooth on and off. Tried disconnecting AirPods for a while, but nothing fixed it. Until I turned my Bluetooth off and shut down my phone. After turning my phone and Bluetooth back on I was able to connect to my AirPods and they started working again. Hope this helps anyone.

Normally that means the audio playback is set to the iPhone, rather than the headphones.

Open the Control Center, tap on the Airplay iconin the Playback controls widget there, to select the correct output.
