Precise Location “required” to set up wifi?

I’m attempting to connect a Renpho scale to wifi via the Renpho app. The app states it can not search for wifi SSIDs unless GPS and precise location are turned on (see image).

Hard to believe that “precise location” is required for the app to scan the available SSIDs. Feels like spying and data mining to me. Particularly with other apps not having this requirement.

I plan on returning the device but wanted to point this out to Apple and the Community. Are apps permitted to require this information to be able to use them?

Yes, Apple only requires apps to state clearly their privacy policy and to not use any forbidden functions. I think you should return the scale, as there is no purpose in knowing its (and your) location. Besides, the Withings, Fitbit and Wyze scales are cheaper and probably better. The Wyze especially, for $24 or $34 (with additional features) are real bargains.

Thanks for the very fast response. Much appreciated.

In their material as well as the screenshot I shared, the manufacturer takes the position that GPS and precise location are required to set up wifi.

Of the many wifi-based IoT devices I have set up via IOS in my home, this is the first that has the requirement for location data.

Do Apple’s App Store developer policies allow for location data to be required under this pretense?
