Apple Watch still getting text message notifications even though my phone is unlocked and I am actively looking at the texts

Recently on large text chains, notifications will still pop up on my watch (as if it thinks my phone is still off) even though I am using my phone and am looking at the text chain. At first I was fine with it but it has become extremely annoying, and I’ve looked everywhere for a solution but can’t seem to find one. Both my phone and watch are fully up to date and I have a series 6. Has anyone else had this problem? Any solutions? My notifications are set to mirror my iPhone.
