Does Find My locate an iPhone that is powered on but not in use?

Hi, does anyone know if the Find my IPhone app shows location only while you use the phone in the moment or does it locate the phone even if you don’t use it (I mean while you still have battery and the phone is turned on but you don’t use it at that exact moment) ?
