Cloning Macbook Mid 2012 HDD TO SSD

Need some help..

I have MacBook Pro Mid 2012 and wanted to upgrade original HDD to Crucial make SSD 500 GB drive..

Now Currently my HDD has Mac OS Catalina 10.15.7 version and when I go to Disk utility the Machintosh HD drive is in APFS (Encrypted) Format..

So does my New SSD drive should also be in APFS format to do cloning from Old HDD ?

Because initially I formateed my new SSD should be in External Journal format and it shows error during coping data and also SSD format automatically changed to APFS format and I am unable to cloning..

Now I got brand new SSD drive which I got replaced from Amazon...

Help please!

If you are going to clone the drive, then I suggest using Carbon Copy Cloner to do the cloning. And as @tjk confirmed you should erase the new SSD as APFS (although macOS 10.15 should work fine with HFS+ and is the last macOS which does IIRC).

After cloning the drive, you will need to re-enable Filevault on the new SSD.
