Two Key Points Here:

A. Purchase Locations:

Know that these gift cards are only valid in the county/region in which they were purchased. So, if you use it in such a place, other than where it was purchased, then the code is unusable, until you return back to it.

B. Avoiding Scams:

I recommend getting it at a retailer - that way you can easily avoid scams. Getting it online might result in scams (and plenty are reported). So, go to a retailer, and have him add it to his Apple Account right then-and-there after then transaction goes through at the cash register. It'd be more safe, from what read on these forums.
