It's a hardware issue, I suspect, rather than software as screenshots won't capture the lines. They also appear when I boot into recovery mode.
To troubleshoot, so far I've
reset the PRAM
• reset the SMC
• rebooted and unplugged all peripherals
• ran First Aid
Any idea what might be causing the problem—and how I can fix it?

good trouble shooting list to rule out software
If you plug into an external monitor to test—this would be insightful by comparison. If no issues externally it points to display/display assembly/projector cable/ or connection
You can try Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac...not as definitive as Apple's own AST2 (Apple Service Toolkit) back bench diagnostic, but may kick out an error code.
