How can I update my Word for Mac without buying a package of 5 programs?

When you grow tired of paying M$ year after year for the privilege of using their bloatware, consider any number of alternatives. Most of them are better and some of them are free.
I just want to update my Word (even thought it has become harder and harder to save and retrieve my documents. When I try to do this, I am shown a package of five programs to buy, price unknown. Why can't I just update my Word for Mac?
