Apps opening finder window rather than new document on start

The native Apple apps in macOS (TextEdit, Pages, Numbers, etc.) have always created a new document when I start the applications. I must have changed a setting accidentally, because all of a sudden all of these apps now go immediately to a Finder/Open window when I start them (as if I pressed cmd-O right after opening the app).

Any suggestions as to how to go back to the blank document default?

When you enable these applications in System Preferences > iCloud > iCloud Drive > Options…, they resort to opening a file chooser panel. Disabling these selections on that panel ceases the file chooser behavior.
