how do I transfer files from external hard drive to my new IMac

Have you tried to Copy the files and paste to the new drive. If you have a Time machine backup you can use Migration Assistant to transfer as well.

Use Migration Assistant or something moly connect the External Hard Disk to the Mac and drag and drop.
