How can I tell how much room I have left on my iCloud storage

On your iPhone go to Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud
You will see at the top of the screen a graph indicating broad categories of use and a statement of how much is used, for example: 800GB of 2TB used.
On a Mac the same can be seen at System Preferences > Apple ID > iCloud.
