Older apple track pad with batteries doesn't connect

I'm familiar with pairing bluetooth devices. All that happens when I try to pair is that it get a new device but not the name but rather the MAC address of the track pad appears. Then after a while it tells me pairing rejected. I fought with it for a while then gave up thinking that the track pad is bad. I have a second identical Apple track pad and it does the same thing. I'm trying to pair it with the first generation M1 MacBook Pro Running Monterey OS. Anyone have any ideas what could be the issue. I think it's software.
