I have an older iPad which displays “Activation Lock”. I have newer iPads, but still use this one periodically. How can I get past this. I don’t remember the original password.

Activation Lock requires the Apple ID and password used to activate the device. If you do not remember that, you can try to recover it. If you forgot your Apple ID - Apple Support

If you have the original receipt with the device's serial number, you can submit a request to Apple. How to remove Activation Lock - Apple Support
