Keynote through HDMI

I have been having issue with playing videos in Keynote presentations when hooked up to a TV. When I get to a slide with a video it will remain blank, not play, and then advance to the next slide when I click. This does not happen every time, but the last 2 presentations it has only played correctly one time out the 6. This last one I had the videos on my desktop as a backup and they played fine through the connection on the TV. When the videos do not play, often the slides will also come through a little distorted, like they were put through a shredder.

After researching online it seems like the suggestion is to use a VGA connection instead of HDMI but the TV's do not have that.

I have tried shutting down other programs and turning off Wi-Fi to try and free things up and that has not helped. Is there anything else I can do to make the videos in Keynote work more reliably?
