Accents no longer work in any app after 12.2

Holding down a key to get the menu of accented characters no longer works, and makes the keyboard not work at all in that particular file. Doesn't matter if it's a Word file, email, or website, the accents menu doesn't appear and the keyboard stops working. I have to close whatever I'm in. Reopening the file or whatever makes it functional again--except that I can't input an accent. iMac from 2017, magic keyboard, OS Monterey 12.2.

That's rather odd. Normally to get letters to repeat (instead of showing accents) you run that command with "false" in place of "true".

You might try doing false, then restart, and do true and restart.

This will sometimes fix that problem:

open Terminal app and type

defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool true

and then restart.

Also get rid of Webroot antivirus if you have that on your machine.

Thanks but now what happens is that letters repeat, but there's still no accent menu. At least the file remains editable. Do not have Webroot antivirus.
