time machine help

Is it ok to partition a new external hd, 1/2 for Time Machine and 1/2 for general use.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 10.12

No, you shouldn’t. For the safety of your data, to reduce the chances it is lost, you should have your Time Machine drive be dedicated to it’s purpose.
