I have a mid-2014 MacBook Pro 15 inch, with:
2.5Ghz Quad-Core intel i7
16GB ram
It was a beast and is still absolutely fine for Adobe Creative Cloud, InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop.
According to Mac Tracker is has a speed of 3177.
My question is – is the new MacBook Air M1 even faster? It scores 7387
So does this mean it is even more capable of running InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop?

If the screen size is important, go for the 14 inch MacBook Pro (the keyboard has been improved on it).
Technically, the 13 inch MacBook Air would work for you.

So just to clarify, the basic level MacBook Air M1 2020 (7-core, 8Gb ram, with a SSD hard drive) is more powerful than the top of the range MacBook Pro 2014? And therefore totally fine to use as a professional graphic designer?
My 14” MacBook Pro is almost half the thickness and half the weight of my old 2008 13" MacBook (and it’s buttery smooth and faster than my previous 21.5" iMac).
Compressor never made the fans run (cool to the touch).
So in summary the cheapest MacBook Air can easily run Adobe Creative Cloud InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop?
In the past I've had to go for something more mid-range or higher to use for professional graphic design work. But it seems the M1 MBA will wipe the floor with my 2014 MBP.
(95% of the time I use an external monitor, so screen size isn't that important to me, although the odd times I'm working away from my desk I think a 13 inch screen would be too small to actually design on)
One thing to note, opt for the 8 GPU version rather than the 7 GPU version. The extra core will help with graphics apps. I personally opted for the 8 GPU version because it comes with the 512 GB SSD as well I do a good bit of photography work and the extra core plus the bigger SSD helps.
Also, if you using Adobe apps, you really should get 16 GB RAM as it cannot be upgraded and Adobe apps are memory pigs.
You could choose more memory to ensure it doesn’t slow down. 😉
f you had a MacBook Pro 15". you may want to consider the new 14" or 16" MacBook Pros. After working on a 15 inch display for years, you my find the 13" screen as being somewhat confining.

I am always amazed at the 1 inch increase every time I use and enjoy my 14" MacBook Pro (it really makes a difference).
Much nicer to look at than the huge chin on the iMac. 😉
My 2020 m1 MBA absolutely smokes my mid 14 MBP.
Waiting until I need a iMac and they have the M1 max or Pro in them. other wise the iMac would just be a bigger version of my MBA.
