Which Apple earphones do you have? Apple makes many different earphones.
As explained in the support document you posted from:
If you have the lightning EarPods, just plug them into the charing port on the iPhone.
If you have the 3.5mm jack EarPods, then you'll need an adapter: Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter - Apple
