Look in the recently deleted album.

Apple calls it an "album" but it's really just a trash can of photos that are "deleted". It doesn't actually delete them permanently unless it's been 30 days since a photo was tagged for deletion, unless one chooses to delete immediately from the recently deleted "album". It's described here:
