How can I delete my photos off my Mac but not from iCloud/my phone?

I’ve turned off iCloud photos on my Mac but they are still there? Can I just delete them?

If you have turned off iCloud photos in your photo app on your Mac, you can safely delete your pictures from the Mac.

Of course, it's always good to make a Time Machine backup before you do anything drastic, just in case.
