I used "erase this Mac" and I'm getting a flashing white folder icon with a black question mark on it. That's all I'm getting.

I'm used "erase this Mac" on a 2012 15" MacBook Pro. Turning it in as trade in. Waited connected to power overnight and am getting a flashing white folder icon with a black question mark on it. Can't get out of that screen.

I followed the advice to restart and immediately click "command+R. Now I have a padlock icon and a progress bar, but no progress, and an arrow that doesn't respond. Thanks.
