I suddenly have two folders with my user name , one with _1 and another with _1_2 suffixes. Can

I suddenly have a duplicate folder under users. One has my name_1 and the other byname_1_2 though I have no idea why it suddenly appeared. I tried to delete one folder through the user panel in preferences but it only shows "byname". I can't delete the folder directly from the users folder, either. Having two folders seems to be be interfering with installing Topaz plugins, with messages of no directory found.

Any ideas how I might be able to delete the duplicate user folder?

My only guess would be to rename the home folder. Make sure you do this from another admin user account or you will create a lot more problems. You must log out of the user you are going to change, and then log into the other user account.

You don't have to rename the short user name, but you should rename whatever home folder it is using to match your short user name.

Do create a new admin user now, as Barney mentioned.

And before anything else, make sure to have a full up to date backup.

Changing the user account as Barney suggested might solve it, but it is always a risky operation.

First of all we need to determine which is the real home folder. If press command-shift-H in tge Finder, where does it take you?
