Watch Pairing Prompts IOS Update

When trying to pair an Apple Watch Series 3, I'm prompted to update IOS on my iPhone, but I am already current on IOS 14.8.1.

This watch was previously paired to another iPhone in our household, but has not been used for 9+ months. I'm confident that the WatchOS is out of date.

I am stuck in a loop. Any suggestions?

Depending on what watchOS version it is running, you may need to update your iPhone to iOS 15.

The most current iOS version is iOS 15, not 14.8.1. 14.8.1 is available, but may not be able to support a watch running watchOS 8.

If the watch was updated to the current watchOS 8, you will need iOS 15 for it.

If its running watchOS 7, then iOS 14 should work.
