Does Finder/QuickTime re-encode video files when you convert to audio only?

Does Finder/QuickTime re-encode video files when you convert to audio only or does It merely extract the audio from the video?

Video to audio I used a shortcut to convert a video into an audio but every time I saved it to file I could never find it again…. I’m doing a project on imovie and I wanted to put an audio over the video but every time i go to my files it’s not there…

The answer is that it doesn't re-encode if you choose the File > Export as > Audio Only option while the video is playing in QuickTime Player.
