Notifications on Both

I've never had an Apple Watch got my first one recently and it is the new Series 7. I've had iPhones for years and have personalized ringtones for my contacts and now if I'm wearing the Watch the iPhone does not make any sounds. I don't know how to change the audio and notification settings on the new Watch but have tried many things including muting the watch which does nothing. Just took the watch off and it's the only thing that makes the iPhone ringtones sound again. So not sure of the watch's value? I didn't buy it for notifications of text messages and calls from my iPhone.

How do I turn the sound notifications for text and calls on my apple watch series 7, because my iphone 13 ringtones are better to hear than a little ding from the watch?
