I'm trying to add some crawling text over a blank area and iMovie won't play that footage when I hit the play button or the space bar. What am I missing or doing wrong?

I don't have my mouse sitting over the play area or playhead and this is a newly created file. The file is quite long, 20 mins and 27 seconds, but it plays perfectly without the text there and when the text is added, that's when it stops playing. I can make a short video of what I'm talking about if you think that would help. Thanks.

A screen shot would help. Are you using an iMovie title with an Apple font and not a 3rd party font? Even an Apple font can sometimes become corrupted. Go to Applications/FontBook.app and open it. The font names will be displayed. Select the font that you are using and do a File/Validate font to find out if the font has issues. If it has issues, that might be what is causing the clip not to play. Or if it is a duplicate font you can delete or disable one of the duplicates. You can also try changing fonts.

Another thing you can try is deleting preferences. Open iMovie while holding down the Option and Command keys and select to delete preferences in the box that appears. iMovie will open in a new library. Reopen your old library to get back to your projects. Deleting preferences is a safe procedure that will not cause data loss or disruption to your project.
