I am working on a podcast project, and GarageBand keeps losing one tracks audio files, there are a number of segments - the segment shows when I reopened the file but it is blank. These are edited audio segments, and I save after each addition. Any ideas on how to fix this. It is a mess for this project.

From your post it appears that you seem to be losing a track after saving GarageBand projects.
The first thing we would do is to check to confirm there is storage space available on the Mac. Click the Apple logo in the upper left corner. Click About This Mac > Storage.
You want to be sure there is at least 15% of the hard drive available. This allows the Mac to operate most efficiently.
It is also a good practice to power cycle the Mac. While simple, this can refresh the macOS, apps and connections.
If the issue remains, try starting up the system in what is called safe mode. This will help isolate this issue.
To start in safe mode, begin with the computer powered off. Follow the directions found here, depending on what type of Mac you have: How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support
The computer will take longer to start in safe mode, and the screen may have some distorted video as it starts up. This is normal. Once you are logged in, use the system and test to see if the issue continues.
If everything seems to work as expected, go ahead and restart the computer normally and test again. Starting in safe mode forces the computer to run some disk checks similar to First Aid. This can resolve some issues.
