Is it better to set up new iMac with Time Machine external back up drive or migration assistant?

My new iMac 24" was just delivered. Want to transfer ALL apps and docs from my 2013 iMac to the new machine. What is the best way to do that? Migration assistant? Or back up drive up-to-date with Time Machine?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities.

The best way is to restore from a Time Machine backup. Please see: Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant - Apple Community.

I agree. Migration Assistant is easy to use and is provided by Apple specifically for these transfers. Be sure to pay attention and follow the instructions. There are some things to consider. M.A. can transfer all of your files or none. You cannot pick and choose. You can either transfer you apps or you may choose to install fresh new apps in the new computer. Either way, some of the will have to be reregistered in order to function. Then you can use Time Machine to back up the new computer, just as you did the old computer. Enjoy your new Mac.
