Safari on iPad

Is there way way to revert Safari back to the look and feel prior to iPad OS 15? What are those minature windows every time I open the app? They are annoying and make me want to throw the iPad across the room every time I open the app. I want to open the app and see a full screen of my start page. You shouldn't have to edit and clean up your start page.

First, Safari now has two options for displaying the Tab Bar - the more familiar being the Separate Tab Bar. You can select this here:

Settings > Safari > [Tabs] Separate Tab Bar

Now the “miniature windows”…

I suspect that you actually make reference to the “Shelf” - this being a new feature of the revised iPadOS multitasking environment.

iPadOS permits you to have multiple “instances” of the same App - each instance being self contained. The shelf, when triggered, shows a thumbnail of each running instance of an App.

For example, if you have three running instances of Safari, each with its own set of open tabs, you will see three thumbnails corresponding to each running instance of Safari - plus a button to open a new instance of Safari. Simply tapping a thumbnail will switch directly to that running instance of Safari. Each App has its own corresponding shelf.

This article from Appleinsider has a useful explanation of this new feature along with many of the updates to multitasking:

The iPad User Guide is also a rich source of frequently overlooked information. The Guide is available both online using a web browser (such as Safari), or as an Apple Books download:

You should note that the shelf is an integral component of the multitasking User Interface. It cannot be disabled.

I hope this information and insight provides some helpful clarity.

Provide Apple Feedback:

Based on all you've said, provided Apple with feedback. Safari is what it is in the current iPad OS. No, it cannot be downgraded. So, recommend to Apple that they make it such an option.  Apple may not get back you, but the more feedback they receive on this, the more they will know what their customers prefer, and what to consider in models to come.

  1. Go Here: Feedback - iPad - Apple
  2. Select: "Feature Request" for "Feedback Type"
  3. Comment: on why you think these specs should be included in Safari for iPadOS 15
  4. Proceed form there as necessary
