How to remove a photo from an album in Apple Photos?

Can anyone please advise on how to edit an album (not a shared album, just one of my albums) to remove photos that got into an album by mistake? I DON'T want to delete the pictures from the library, just take them out of an album. This seems bizarrely hard to do, if I just delete them from the album they just bounce back in there.

I have a Macbook Pro with BigSur 11.6 so my Photos is the latest version.

Select the image and tap the delete key. That's it.

If it is a smart album, you cannot choose what is included, it goes by the criteria.
